Only 85 people , the 85 richest in the world according to the Forbes list, with names, have an equal sharing wealth to half the world's population , ie , to 3,600 million.
" The eighty- five equal to three million in 1600 " are figures that should repeat like a mantra throughout this week as global economic leaders meet between the Swiss mountains of Davos. The global economic inequality is the major threat of the century, an untenable threat and a recipe for economic and social disaster. Both in rich countries and in countries of low and middle income , the richest 10% of the company increased its revenues exponentially over the past 30 years , while the poorest 40 % of the population have decreased. Today , seven out of ten people live in countries where inequality has increased during this period. Spain is not left out of this pest: 20 people have a similar income 20% of the poor fortune , and is the second most unequal country in the European Union ( behind only Latvia). The crisis has only accentuate this trend..
How is it possible that half of world income in the hands of 1% of the population? And what wealth of this 1 % , amounting to $ 110 billion , is 65 times the total income that has the poorest half of the world population? Because inequality is not only the problem of an aberrant distribution of money and wealth. The accumulation of wealth corrodes democratic institutions and processes, so that political decisions rather than seek the welfare of the majority, serve the interests of the minority. This intrusion of the economic interests in the media discourse on the political agenda and strengthens their privileges and leads to more accumulation of wealth and greater inequality , perpetuating injustice throughout generations.
Wherever you look, from negotiations to combat climate change , trade agreements , peace negotiations , financial and banking secrecy regulation, food availability , tax systems, land rights , management financial crisis , health or education , inequality is undermining the principles of justice and consolidating privileges for the few and disadvantages for a large majority. In Spain , eight out of ten Spaniards believe that the law favors the wealthy.
You can not win the fight against poverty if the problem of economic inequality is not save . It can be done and simultaneously promote economic growth , there are examples in history where this has been done . In our report to the Governing elites : Kidnapping democratic and economic inequality , from Oxfam urge leaders at the World Economic Forum to launch the foundation for the taxation of XXI century, where evasion and tax avoidance have no place , end to tax havens , an end to the opacity and all investments are made public , and where the rich never contribute less than people with fewer resources , a future where wages and decent conditions for all workers ensure , where governments invest public money in health systems , education and universal social protection and quality , and which ensure equal opportunity and democracy , which are the heritage of citizenship are strengthened. Recognized opinion leaders in Spain support this diagnosis, we recommend reading their reviews in the Reflections Report for Spain ..
