Starbucks has been telling investors that his business was profitable, while officially reported losses. After analyzing this contradiction, Reuters says it is due to "tax evasion" as practiced by the company, a practice that says the agency used by many multinationals worldwide thanks to "perfectly legal tactics." "Starbucks has excelled because investors said one thing and a different tax collector," says Reuters in the interview that he has dedicated to the famous coffee chain, the second largest in the world behind McDonald's.
According to the accounts presented by the British branch of Starbucks operating in the UK since 1998, the company has accumulated over 3,000 million pounds (3,700 million euros) in sales of coffee, and opened 735 outlets. However, only paid 8.4 million pounds in income taxes.
In the past three years, Starbucks has not officially reported any benefit, and did not pay income taxes on sales of 1.200 billion pounds in the UK. McDonald's, however, had a tax bill of more than 80 million pounds over the 3,600 million pounds of sales in the UK. Kentucky Fried Chicken, another chain of fast food restaurants, incurred taxes of 36 million pounds after a turnover of 1,100 million pounds, according to the accounts of its British units.
However, transcripts of calls from investors and analysts over 12 years show that Starbucks executives regularly talked about the UK company as "profitable", said they were very happy with it, and even cited it as a role in the United States.
In 2007, with 50 million loss benefits
As an example, Reuters cites the case of 2007. In late September, the accounts of Starbucks UK unit showed its tenth consecutive annual loss. However, in November, the chief operating officer, Martin Coles, told analysts in a conference on the fourth-quarter earnings that the benefits of the unity of the United Kingdom were financing the expansion of Starbucks in other foreign markets. The then Chief Financial Officer Peter Bocian, said the unit had enjoyed operating margins of profit of nearly 15% of that year, which would represent a gain of almost 50 million pounds.
The company, meanwhile, has maintained his innocence. Troy Alstead, Starbucks CFO and one of the listed company officials who participated in calls with analysts that Reuters has reviewed, defended his comments made years ago, saying the company strictly follows international accounting standards and pay the appropriate level of taxes in all countries where it operates.
Nothing indicates, however, that Starbucks has violated any law. Indeed, the overall tax rate of the group-including deferred taxes, which may or may not be paid in the future-was 31% last year. But in point of revenue abroad, Starbucks paid an average tax rate of 13%, one of the lowest in the consumer goods sector.
