The New York Times points out that waiting for the rescue of Spain "has become Spain's version of Godot: Waiting Rajoy," referring to the work of the theater of the absurd written in the late '40s past by Samuel Beckett.
"For various reasons, Mariano Rajoy, the prime minister has postponed the request for help through a financial assistance program that Europe has adapted to the needs of Spain. Many economists, analysts and business executives are increasingly concerned about the delay costs, "says the NYT.
The New York daily says that all "warn that waiting for help, and the uncertainty created by the delay, threaten to push the economy into a deeper recession." "And that, they say, could increase the final cost for Spain and Europe if the definitive aid should be granted under crisis conditions," says The New York Times.
"While Spain's borrowing costs remain below 6%, as they have done since the European Central Bank said it would buy bonds in the country if asked, the Government of Rajoy would seem to be no reason to rush . Yet the Spanish debt downgrade to junk bond category near last week by Standard & Poor's underscored the fragility of the country's finances, "the paper said in an article that reviews the situation.
