Antony Tyler, director general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), an organization of 240 companies from 115 countries, on Wednesday criticized the "unacceptable" and "unsustainable" higher fees charged by airports in Spain this year and those planned for the next three years. The airlines have asked the European Commission to investigate these increases which, in the opinion of the industry, will have a devastating effect on the industry.
"It makes no sense that a country that is so dependent on tourism less competitive," Tyler said in a meeting with journalists. The association expects the industry to lose this year in Europe EUR 1,200 million, 1,900 million after winning in 2010 by the economic crisis ravaging the Old Continent, and especially Spain, where traffic is falling.
Aena, the public company that manages the Spanish airport network, this year agreed to an average increase rate of 19%, it becomes 50% in Barajas and El Prat. In 2013, the overall rates go back up about 8%. According to AENA, the law allows to increase rates between 2013 and 2015 as well as the consumer price index (CPI) in October, more than five points, to recover past investments. This is what will happen next year and, almost certainly, the following, as AENA need urgently relieve the burden of massive debt dragging, amounting to 14,000 million.
The real gains end up being much higher, due to the complex composition of the fees, according Aceta. In a recent report, the management estimates that the cumulative increase between 2011 and 2013 will be 67.49% in all the airports, ie, 18.76% on average per year (an annual 28.51% in Barajas ).
The IATA has asked the European Commission to investigate the rate hike
"Airlines are cutting back wherever they can to offset rising fuel and traffic decline, but measures such as rate hikes as important now are not very sensible," said Tyler. "European airlines are losing money and ask them to pay more taxes now is crazy, because if you raise rates plus low traffic and fewer people will fly. At such a time should not cripple a strategic sector," he said.
There have been very concrete consequences. In June, shortly after the adoption of the rate hike for 2012, the budget airline Easyjet announced he was leaving his home base in Madrid by the high rates and oversupply of cheap. The airline will operate flights to Barajas, but its aircraft and personnel allocated to other airports outside of Spain from next winter 2012-2013.
The IATA has asked the European Commission to investigate the rate hike, as it ensures that the law obliges AENA first consulting companies. According Aceta, association representing companies in Spain, the rate increase will result in a rise of 6% notes, while it will be lost by 2.9 million passengers a year. "Spanish companies can not leave their bases in Spain, but it would not be surprising that other countries choose to invest in expanding the business," said Tyler.
