The Ford plant in Almussafes, the largest factory in Valencia and one of the major Spanish factories, saw on Wednesday cleared its future for many years. It is the result "bittersweet," as described by union sources, the decision of the multinational to close its facility in Genk, eastern Belgium, which employs 4,300 people, and move production to Valencia.
From 2014, as confirmed by several sources, the Spanish plant will receive the three models that were manufactured in Belgium: Mondeo (Ford's big sedan), S-Max and Galaxy (both family vehicles in five versions seven gates with large luggage). To these must be added the Kuga, the new terrain of the Blue Oval, which has just begun to be manufactured in Almussafes, and the Transit Connect van, which is scheduled for next year.
The Valencia plant will lose, say the sources, the production of C-MAX (and Grand C-MAX version), heir within the ranges of the Ford Focus, whose production will be transferred to the company's factory in Saarlouis (Germany ).
The reorganization leaves Valencia as reference manufacturer of larger vehicles of the brand in Europe. This fits with the profound transformation of the facilities has been carried out in Almussafes, where Ford has invested nearly 1,000 million euros since 2007.
The line of cars like the Focus and C-Max, smaller, is and will probably be the best selling brand for its price and market conditions. The new distribution benefits, however, the Valencia plant, because this loss will be offset by the fact happen to manufacture three models to five. And because larger vehicles, although produced in a smaller, more assembly time required, so that the demand for labor is not much different.
The scenario seems to indicate that the number of employees at Ford will inevitably increase and recover the third shift. The crisis has reduced the number of workers at 6,100 Almussafes, but is likely to grow from 2014 back to the 7500 environment.
In August, Ford announced that it would reorganize its production in Europe to address a clear case of overcapacity. The long crisis has sharply falling demand in the continent. From an overall figure for all makes of some 17 million vehicles (with a forecast of 20) has passed sales barely reach 13 million.
The Belgian plant was, by all indications, the most vulnerable to the setting: the investments had long paralyzed and in 2012 has been running only four days a week.
Today's announcement comes to support, on the other hand, the line maintained in recent years by UGT, the majority union at the factory, which has reached agreements in recent years with the company involving basically moderation in the demands of the working conditions in exchange for investment commitments of the multinational.
The Genk plant still assemble cars over the next year until the end of the manufacturing cycle. The first news of the Belgian unions departed, and have subsequently been confirmed officially in Spain.
Hundreds of factory workers concentrated Belgian factory doors during business meeting with union representatives. When they were informed of the closure there were some scenes of tension. The heads of Ford Europe, Stephen Odell front, have plans to meet Wednesday with Belgian Prime Minister Elio di Rupo and head of the Department of Labor, Monica De Conick, according to a government spokesman confirmed.
Ford has cut the work load in the factory in Genk gradually from a decade ago. In 2003, the Belgian factory suffered a decisive blow when the multinational decided to produce the Focus model in Almussafes, a decision which resulted in the loss of 3,000 jobs in Genk. The factory was opened in 1964.
Ford management had a meeting with the council to communicate Almussafes unions officially the decision. According to these sources, the management has informed them that this is a "first step" of the restructuring plan, but have not provided details of dates Belgian plant closure or when Almussafes assume that workload.
From the representation of UGT and CCOO trade union at the plant have declined to make any assessment of the decision to close the factory in Belgium, until the direction of the company did not provide details. In this regard, have been referred to a meeting in November of the European Works Council, which will discuss the consequences of the measure.
A spokesman pointed out the UGT "bittersweet" and "regret" for the future of Belgian workers, while from CC OO is considered that this is not "good news for Ford Europe and the brand" and has expressed its "utmost sympathy" with Genk workers.
