The evolution of credit follows the same path as the GDP, but harder. According to the latest data from the Bank of Spain, the volume of credit granted by banks has fallen by 5.7% in the year to August, which is the biggest decline in 50 years, as happened in the previous month. Including the financing, the decline remains at 5%.
But official statistics provides other relevant information: the amount of new business in August in mortgage, consumer and other purposes, amounted to 3,760 million, is the lowest since January 2003, when starting the statistics.

Although August is a month traditionally weak in credits, the 2012 is well below previous years. Current figures are really small: 1.718 million were granted in housing loans (the lowest figure of the series), 978 million and 1.064 million in consumption for other purposes.
This drought is also reflected when calculating the annualized data, ie September 2011 to August 2012, compared with the previous 12 months. In the past year loans were granted by 65,622,000 (the lowest figure since 2003, the first year with available data) and 25% lower than the previous year.
60% of the business is linked to delinquency brick, according to the Bank of Spain
To get an idea of how it has turned off the tap, it is good to note that the record year in granting credit was 2006, in the final stretch of the bubble. That exercise gave banks 289 857 000, more than four times that loans in the last 12 months. This is a clear reference to what has been flooding and drought now.
This is due to two factors: lower demand and low capacity to pay with Spanish banks. Markets remain closed for most of the entities and only received 370,000 million European Central Bank to meet deadlines allow.
This situation is very bad for the economy, but also for the industry because if you do not pay, does not generate margins. At the same time, the liability is more expensive because you pay up to 4% on deposits, which in August slightly slowed the rate of decline from previous months.
And, to tighten the situation, provisions for bad debts rise is growing. The escalation in defaults in the banking conquered another peak in August, to stand at 10.5% of the loans in the financial system (banks, savings banks, cooperatives and credit institutions). The previous record in the economic crisis (9.15% in February 1994), already passed in June, it is becoming increasingly distant. The stakes of 10% was exceeded for the first time in July, according to the revised data for that month.
The decision to classify banks as bad loans a growing portion of their loans is a trend from the start of this crisis, largely determined by the real estate collapse: according to data from the Bank of Spain, 60% of all corporate defaults are focuses on activities related to the brick. But the reclassification of doubtful loans has gained in intensity since June.
In this historic rally weighs rising unemployment, a variable that anticipated increases in defaults. But above all, the housing slump and a greater emphasis on credit ratings as doubtful. All indications are that the increase in delinquencies will fall apace, as these two factors continue to dominate the decisions of much of Spanish banks. The Bank of Spain issued a circular this month urging banks to bad debts to surface that may have been hidden by refinancing loans to companies in difficulty to repay the borrowed evident.
Of the total of 1.7 billion in loans, 178,597,000 were dubious in August, more than 50,000 million a year ago.
