Two years in prison and a probation once released from prison, plus a fine of five million dollars. That is the conviction that a New York judge today imposed to Rajat Gupta, Goldman Sachs exconsejero for leaking secret information.
The verdict was read Wednesday by federal Judge Jed Rakoff and Gurpta sentence, 63 years have passed confidential data between March 2007 and January 2009 to Raj Rajaratnam, founder of Galleon Group. Rajaratman currently serving 11-year sentence for having profited by insiders, as Warren Buffett's entry into Goldman Sachs.
Rajat Gupta was convicted by a jury in New York last June to three counts of fraud and one of conspiracy.
"Your conduct has tarnished forever a reputation that took years to cultivate. Hopefully others think skipping the laws learn the lesson and not follow suit, "said Rajat Gupta of the Attorney Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara.
"Not only violated ethical standards and responsibilities of a director of Goldman Sachs, but he broke the law," he said on his part the acting director of the FBI office in New York, Mary Galligan. The head of the FBI added that this sentence should serve to send a clear message: "passing information to a friend, when it comes to insider trading, has consequences."
According to the prosecution, Gupta and Rajaratnam participated with twenty other people in a fraud to disclose confidential information of Goldman Sachs, Procter & Gamble and Smucker's for later transactions in the securities markets.
