The European Commission Vice President and Competition Commissioner Joaquín Almunia, argued Monday that the transfer price of the toxic assets that take the so-called bad bank are low to ensure profitability. "The benefits of the creation of this body depends on the transfer price of assets: the lower the price, the better the chance of selling the asset at a profit," Almunia said in the opening lecture of the new academic year at the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics.
The Asset Management Company of the Bank Restructuring Coming (Sareb)-the unofficial name of the bad bank-will be released next December. The purpose of this organization, recalled Almunia, is that taxpayers recover "most investment" after "public shares in the company are sold at market prices." According to Vice President of the Commission, Brussels expects the process to recapitalize Spanish banks that need it culminates in "mid-2013".
