The Nobel laureate economist Paul Krugman examines the economic consequences of the austerity policies of the Spanish government and alerts its president, Mariano Rajoy, the danger of pursuing the long awaited productivity growth through cuts in the salaries of civil servants . He also warns that the country's recovery is "nearly impossible" unless Spain "receive a great help" and there is a "boom entire eurozone" with "some inflation", points out, "in creditor countries ".
The columnist for The New York Times makes a comparison between the popular ruled Spain and the United Kingdom in the days before the Great Depression, but with nuances. "OK, not exactly his fault," referring to Rajoy, "is the whole European situation."
After World War I, recalls Krugman, UK opted for a tough austerity policy and pursued an internal devaluation through deflation to tackle the huge debt from the conflict. This policy, however, did not give the expected results. The economy stagnated for a long time and the debt is not reduced. A situation similar to the judgment debtor countries of Europe, especially Spain.

"The drastic cuts in the wages of civil servants are regarded as increased competition, although in fact they are not," he warns.
