At stake are 1,300 new jobs. Renault factories in Spain compete with other plants of the automotive group to take over a new business plan that will more workload in a very difficult time for the sector, which is suffering a slump in sales and production for the European crisis. To win, the Spanish plants have to be the most efficient. "Today Turkey plant is very competitive," said a company spokesman in Madrid. The Spanish leadership has asked the staff more flexibility, wage restraint and increase the annual day.
When unemployment merely grow, proposals like this, even at the cost of more effort on the part of employees, are not easily found in other sectors. The car is getting hold crisis better than others in terms of employment: between 2007 and 2011, the industry has destroyed about 20% of the jobs, in the automotive, 8%.
Truck manufacturer Iveco, Fiat Group announced investments in Spain in June for 500 million euros and the creation of 1,200 jobs. The Japanese Nissan will invest 300 million between 2013 and 2014. "Ford, GM, PSA Peugeot-Citroen, Volkswagen and Seat are now materializing investments announced months ago," say sources Anfac, association of automobile manufacturers. For Ford, the group pledged in June 2011 to spend 812 million to its factory in Valencia to produce two new models.
Labour flexibility, agreed with the unions, is a key to explain the survival of the sector. These measures were implemented in the nineties, but its use has increased with the crisis. Factories began to open more days and hours agreed bags (a tool used to encompass the production to demand and avoid temporary staff adjustments). "Our industry is holding up better, and labor flexibility in Spain because we have an automotive component sector is key," says Manuel Garcia Salgado, UGT. "But we can ask us to compete with the working conditions of Turkey, it is difficult to compete with countries outside the EU," he warns.
For Renault, the Spanish leadership has asked the staff wage restraint, expanding the categories of entry, increased working hours per year, reducing bonuses (holidays, Saturdays, nights ...) and introduction of special shifts job. "We are asked to accept these conditions, but not knowing even if the dome in France Spain to elect more workload," says Garcia Salgado. In the same vein, CCOO has reaffirmed its willingness to dialogue, "but not at any price." At Nissan, for example, the staff in September rejected a deal to manufacture 25,000 vehicles in exchange for more flexible conditions.
The Spanish leadership Renault wants the agreement as soon as possible to present to the group in November, the month in which you plan to decide which plants (France and Turkey are the countries that have more options) awarded the manufacture of two new cars (one of Renault them and the other, a shared platform with Nissan). This, "the factory of Palencia volumes reach 280,000 vehicles a year, compared to 190,000 today," the company said.
The possibility of increasing the workload comes at a time when the sector is facing a serious crisis due to falling sales in Spain and in the rest of Europe, which has left the activity levels of the nineties. This year will enroll fewer than 700,000 cars, a record negative. The Government has launched Pive Plan (includes direct payments of 2,000 euros for the purchase) to try to boost the market.
