Since leaving the Catholic University of Milan University in 1990 as an assistant, Alfredo Altavilla (Taranto, 1963) has spent his entire career in the Fiat Group, holding various management positions and participating in important operations such as the agreements reached with the U.S. General Motors and Chrysler. It is one of the bastions of Sergio Marchionne and almost two years directed the designs of Iveco, the commercial vehicle brand and industrial heir Pegaso facilities. This past June, surprised all and sundry announcing investments of 500 million euros in its Spanish plants and the creation of 1,200 jobs.
Question. Two months have passed since the announcement. Have they changed or modified some circumstances some plans?
Response. The investment rationale is because we wanted to concentrate production of heavy vehicles in a single plant. And the choice of Madrid's because this plant grows in the full cycle of production and has the characteristics and competencies to achieve the high quality of manufacturing that has shown with the new Stralis. In these two months we advance the process agreed with the Spanish government and accelerated the shift of production plant Ulm to Madrid. In fact, there is no longer any truck in Ulm. This has forced us to also accelerate the pace of investment.
P. The announcement of these investments coincided with those of other brands. Does Spain still an attractive country?
R. The answer is clearly yes. For two reasons: our experience with Spanish workers is very good. Madrid is one of our best plants in the world. For quality and suggestions that make us the same workers to improve production. And the second reason that Spain is very interesting to invest is industrial policy pursued by the Government, both at central and regional levels.
P. This means that aid has played an important role in the decision.
"We accelerated
moving
production
Ulm to Spain "
R. Yes, but, above all, what I liked is the system that has brought the Spanish Government. Not as direct aid, but the contributions to develop the project.
P. Are they prepared to take Spanish plant production increases once the crisis or to fit further reductions?
R. In the first case there is no problem. Quite the contrary. As for the second, and we are using the existing employment contracts and will continue to use the instruments of flexibility allowed by Spanish law. For now, we continue with the hiring Madrid as we announced the Government and, for now, in Valladolid excesses we have structural problems and continue with the planned program.
P. Do they maintain 1,200 jobs forecasts to 2016?
R. Yes Totally.
P. How's Iveco against competition? Does winning or losing market share?
R. In the case of light commercial're losing share slightly. Iveco is the leader in Spain and Italy, which are markets are plummeting, and that makes lower our share in the European market. However, in heavy've begun to see an interesting odds recovery despite the fall of Spain and Italy. This confirms that the new Stralis is finding a warm welcome in central and northern Europe.
P. Do you foresee the economic situation a new era of mergers and acquisitions in the field of commercial vehicles?
R. No. Since this is a highly concentrated industry. I think there is plenty of open space for new alliances between companies in Europe.
"There are no more spaces for new alliances in Europe"
P. And do not expect more approaches to achieve economies of scale and better compete?
R. Economies of scale are never enough. But you can reach concrete agreements with certain products without exchange of shares.
P. How to live the impact of new technologies? Are adapting as cars with hybrids, electric ...?
R. Absolutely yes. Because this route trucks is even faster than in cars. The Daily lists all current alternatives, there are versions in the range of all kinds, as with the Eurocargo and Stralis. In these cases the advantage playing against cars that may have adapted better infrastructures, and it is returning vehicles at the end of the day to the same places where it is much easier to establish structures for recharge .
P. You participated in the negotiations with Chrysler and knows the advantages of their approach. Do the synergies in the field of commercial vehicles? Can take up projects like Campagnola?
R. Why not? Chrysler has a very strong brand in commercial vehicle called Ram. With the assistance of Ram you can get to sell products such as Iveco Daily in the U.S. or use their platforms in pickup models, for example.
P. China now accounts for 50% of production and plans Iveco triple it, that would be a percentage of total sales high.
R. China is the largest market in the world. And we want to accompany this market and its growth with new products and production capabilities. Most importantly, the product architectures converge with those we have in other parts of the world. Because we can take advantage of economies of scale even in Europe. The problem is that Chinese law does not allow us to have a majority stake in our business there and, therefore, we can reflect on our accounts the entire production of those plants.
P. And fear not absorb technology and then dispense with joint production?
P. It's a risk, indeed.
P. Why they had failed alliance with Renault Irisbus, to manufacture buses?
R. It failed because two operators were too weak to compete in a market with independent brands, and indeed today Irisbus is a competitor with good opportunities, although it should be noted that the bus segment in Europe is very weak restrictions on public spending. But Brazil is a segment with a strong development and we are expanding rapidly in that continent.
P. The European Union is investing in the rail freight transport and environmental policies cleaner ... What impact will the road transport and commercial vehicles?
R. I think the road will always be the most important means for transporting goods. This is manifest from ACEA, showing anti intermodality imposed by law. Operators should be able to choose the most effective for their business. Establish by law above 300 miles should be using rail or sea transport is useless.
