The tourism sector is still shown as the strongest pillar of the regional economy to the crisis, but begins to suffer. Not point to an imminent collapse, because it generally maintains good behavior, but the line traced to growth in 2011 has stalled.
The balance of the first six months of the year is a contrast of light and dark. The movement measured in number of hotel stays was 1.1% lower than the same period last year, a fact that, given the general economic situation, it is considered a "reasonably good and positive" for the Minister of Tourism and Commerce, Rafael Rodriguez (IU).
Between January and June, the hotels Andalusian travelers housed 6,924,177, 1.4% less than in the first half of 2011, which held 18,489,440 overnight stays, 1.1% less than a year, distributed almost equally between foreigners (9.4 million), and Spanish (9.08 million). Average occupancy of the squares was 42.55%, slightly more than 27/100 in the first half of 2011, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE).
The overall figure hides a significant contrast between the behavior of domestic and foreign markets. On the positive side, in the first half has confirmed the increasing trend in the flow of foreign tourists, rising by 4.8% the number of overnight stays (9,400,845 in total). The Tourist Movement Survey Frontera (Frontur) notes, however, that the influx of foreigners to Andalusia fell by 5.9%, although the Board prefers to validate registration data rather than surveys, such as Frontur, will disappear .
The Board revised upwards its forecast and equal to the expected summer 2011 the best ever
The highest growth are the main source markets, especially Britain and France, while Germany's only experience change. By contrast, markedly decreases the influx of travelers from European countries most affected by the crisis as Portugal and Italy, falling 20% in overnight stays.
In the dark part of the balance is the decline of the domestic market, attributed to the worsening crisis and uncertainty about the economic situation in Spain. The Andalusian hotel stays accounted 9.88.595 domestic customers, 6.6% less than in 2011. Andalusia is the preferred destination for Spanish travelers, and monopolizes the fifth of the rooms.
For this reason, areas with the highest number of foreign tourists as Costa del Sol offer better performance-indicators of overnight stays in Málaga have increased by 3% -, while Almería, more dependent on the domestic market has experienced a decline in stays 10%.
Rodriguez, one of three members of IU's regional government, said yesterday that "the policies of cuts are the main threat to tourism because rising unemployment, and declining performance expectations and generate a contraction in consumption and fewer possibilities for leisure and enjoyment. " Rodriguez also lamented the effect of "negative news" as the VAT increase, though it added that "despite all odds and bad policies, the tourism sector has enough strength and power to cope."
On the more negative side of tourism employment is also a hotel with a 5% drop. Rodriguez appealed to a "need to reflect on why the job does not evolve in the same direction and proportion that tourism", and stressed that it is a priority of his mandate.
Rodriguez: "The policy of cuts is the worst threat to tourism"
The Board maintains a "cautiously optimistic" about the season, and even after knowing the results of June, has revised upward its forecasts, and expects calcar (+0.1%) results of motion hotel summer 2011, that was the best ever.
