Annual inflation was steady at 2.4% in the eurozone in July, while that of the entire EU also varied and stood at 2.5%, as reported today the EU statistics office Eurostat. A year earlier the rate was set at 2.6% in the euro area and 2.9% across the European Union (EU). It is the twentieth consecutive month with inflation above 2%.
The monthly index of 17 countries in the common currency stood at negative territory in July, with a rate of 0.5%, as well as across the EU, where it reached 0.4%.
In Spain, annual inflation was 2.2% in July, four tenths, while the month was negative 0.9%. These data had already been published by the National Statistics Institute (INE) on Tuesday. The Spanish agency blamed the pharmaceutical copayment rising global prices.
The underlying inflation in the euro area (excluding energy prices and fresh food) was 1.9% in July.
Countries that recorded lower inflation were Sweden (0.7%), Greece (0.9%) and Germany and Latvia, at 1.9%. Where else have raised prices, by contrast, is in Hungary (5.7%), Malta (4.2%) and Estonia (4.1%). Inflation has fallen in 12 Member States compared to the previous month.
The products that have become more expensive in the euro area during the month of July were alcohol and snuff (4.7%), households (3.8%) and transport (3.2%) while the sectors which had a lower price increase were communications (-3.1%), education (0.7%) and recreation and culture (1.0%).
