Inflation rises to 2.7% in August driven by fuel prices
Gasoline and diesel reached historic highs this month

The Spanish economy is now facing another problem: inflation. Fuels, historical highs, have driven the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to 2.7% in August, representing an increase of five tenths to the rate recorded in July, the biggest gain since March price 2010, as has moved on Thursday the National Statistics Institute (INE). The combination of recession, high prices and wages down is a blow to the pockets of citizens, also face starting Saturday to a massive rise in VAT.
After reaching a peak in mid-2011, inflation had been relaxed. Became less than 2% (1.9%) for three months in 2012, which was a relief for the economy, which is trapped in its second recession in three years and is on the verge of rescue. But the tide has turned in July, mainly due to the introduction of pharmaceutical copayment, which requires the vast majority of users of the public health system to pay some of the drugs. In August, the main causes were the fuels: the price of a liter of petrol in July broke the barrier of 1.5 euros.
Rising prices in an economy like the Spanish soul-a phenomenon when it reaches certain limits is known to economists as stagflation-can have a devastating effect on the purchasing power of citizens. "The combination of rising fuel prices and through VAT is not the best scenario for consumption," says Sara Baliña, Economist of Financial Analysts International (AFI). The household consumption takes months down (in the second quarter fell 1%, one of its biggest setbacks). AFI experts estimate that consumption will end the year with a fall of 2% and disposable income will shrink by 4%.
The harmonized CPI also rises five tenths to 2.7% compared to July
Keep in mind that not only raise the fuel or VAT, but also there have been increases in highway tolls, university fees, rates of hundreds of all kinds, such as nurseries and although it has no effect on prices but in the pockets, the IPRF also gained.
Meanwhile, the Consumer Price Index (HICP), which measures changes in prices in the same method in all euro area countries, in August stood at 2.7%, five tenths above July rate. The data published this morning is for the advancement of the CPI for the month of August. The final results will be published on 12 September.
The prices of a liter of petrol and diesel have set new highs this week after dearer by 0.06% and 0.14%, respectively, at the gates of the return operation of the August holidays and rising VAT, which will take effect from Saturday.
The price per liter of petrol last month broke the barrier of 1.5 euros
Specifically, the price per liter of petrol, which last week broke the barrier of 1.5 euros, stood at 1.512 euros, while the price of diesel stood at the 1.422 euros, according to the Oil Bulletin disseminated by Europa Press.
These prices reflect an average, but in some stations of Madrid liter of gasoline rises to 1.538 euros, and that of diesel consumed by about 80% of the Spanish fleet, already exceeds 1.44 euros.
Thus, gasoline and diesel maintain the upward trend that started since last July and mark records for a second week. Since the beginning of last July, the price of a liter of petrol has gone up by over 12%, while that of diesel is 8.56% more expensive.
Fill the tank, more expensive
The filling of a gasoline vehicle through 55 liters now costs 83.1 euros, 10 euros more than a year ago. In the case of diesel, representing a payout of 78.2 euros, almost 10 euros more expensive than at the end of August 2011. This rise in the price will be higher with the increase in VAT from 18% to 21%, starting next Saturday, that more expensive at about 3.6 cents the price per liter of gasoline and about 3.5 cents Euro diesel, which fuels both prices could average 1.8 euros per liter.
This rise in the price of motor fuels has coincided with the rise in oil prices in international markets in recent weeks. However, the price of Brent crude, the European benchmark, currently trading at 112.3 U.S. dollars, more than three dollars below last week, while the U.S. is located in Texas $ 95.21, two dollars cheaper.
Still, fuel prices in Spain remains below the EU average. In fact, gasoline reaches 1.701 euros per liter in the EU-27 to 1.727 euros in the eurozone. In the case of diesel, the price stood at 1.548 euros per liter in the EU-27 and 1.529 euros in the eurozone.
