Greece plans to pay today to "completely normal" maturity of 3,200 million euros of debt to the European Central Bank (ECB), in the beginning of a crucial week for the future of the economy helena. "The bonds of the state by 3,200 million euros in the hands of the ECB shall be paid today as planned," he told Efe Finance Ministry spokesman Dimitris Kanelis.
Greece won last week's 4.063 million euros in an auction of Treasury bills, for which he had to offer an interest rate of 4.43%, slightly higher than the July issue, and the output was the largest market the last two years.
The spokesman declined to comment on the criticism of the Conservative Party "Independent Greeks", which argued that the bonds were purchased by the ECB in the secondary market for 60% of its value, which would mean a profit of 1,280 million euros.
Rejection of a deferral
Greek government attempts to achieve a deferral of repayment of that debt or an advance of a new tranche of 31,000 million euros in the second rescue package has been rejected by their European partners.
At the same time, the Ministry of Finance are working around the clock to balance the details of the cuts in the amount of 11,500 million euros demanded by the creditors, in a week when Prime Minister Andonis Samaras, will meet on Wednesday Athens with the head of the Eurogroup, Jean-Claude Juncker, and will travel to Berlin on Friday, and Paris on Saturday.
Predictably, Samaras deal with European leaders on these cuts and the claim of Athens to achieve a two-year extension of its application, until 2016, not to stifle the economy more. The further cuts expected, as the leaks, more pay cuts for civil servants, the immediate reduction of 15,000 jobs and a snip drastic public on pensions and social benefits.
Given the unpopularity of these measures, the Finance Minister Yannis Sturnaras said in an interview with the weekly To Vima that "unless action is taken our membership in the euro is in danger." "We must take these measures to remain in the eurozone," he stressed. "Otherwise, we live a period of unprecedented poverty," he added. "We have the most expensive welfare state in the euro area," the weekly said, and "we can not keep it with borrowed money."
Anticipating more recession
The dramatic situation of the Greek economy, with an expected drop in economic activity from 7% this year and unemployment in May at 23.1%, has led the government to delay cuts to study in detail what measures may have less social impact.
The release of a new tranche of 31,000 million from the bailout is necessary for Greece to not stop payment, and such repayment depends on the report of the "troika" (IMF, ECB and EC) which will be released in early September.
The German weekly Der Spiegel said on Sunday that one of the conclusions of the "troika" was that the budgetary requirements Hellenic for the next two years are about 2,500 million euros over budget.
