The quality of life of the Spanish population continues to deteriorate. If in 2009 23.4% of the population were at risk of poverty or social exclusion and in 2010 that percentage rose to 25.5%, in 2011 the figure reached 27%, according to a report released today by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. The rate is growing since the beginning of the crisis and puts Spain in the ninth EU with worst figures in a list topped Bulgaria (49%), Romania (40%), Latvia (40% ), Lithuania (33%), Greece (31%) and Hungary (31%).
In all the Twenty-seven, the proportion of persons at risk of poverty or exclusion increased from 23.4% in 2010 to 24% in 2011, a rise of 0.6 points, much milder than that in Spain. In total, 119.6 million Europeans were this situation last year, of which 12.4 were Spanish.
Eurostat considers "at risk of poverty" to people whose income is less than 60% of the national average, suffering from "severe material deprivation" (resources prevent them from paying rent or purchase certain commodities) or have used less 20% of their "work potential" in the last year, not counting students. In Spain, 21.7% in 2011 met the first criterion of poverty, 3.9% the second and 12.2% in the third. The total proportion (27%) is lower than the sum of the three percentages because some people meet several criteria simultaneously, accurate Eurostat.
