"Early in the afternoon (yesterday) there were 22 dead and more than 1,000 missing. We pray that they are alive, but we are concerned because the bodies have begun to appear on beaches and in rivers," said the governor of Alagoas , Teotonio Vilela Filho, a Brazilian agency.
