The Madrid-Barajas Airport in July was the sixth in Europe in number of transactions compared to fifth place from last year, according to a pan-European manager Eurocontrol air traffic control. With 545 flights daily, the largest airport in Spain lost the position to benefit the German airport of Munich.
Traffic at the largest airport in Spain fell 11.1% in July compared with the same month of 2011. It is the fourth largest decline among the 50 busiest airports in Europe after Budapest, Prague and Athens.
Addition of Barajas, in the list of the biggest airports in Europe in July there are five airfields Spanish: Barcelona-El Prat (9th), Palma de Mallorca (11th), Malaga (36th), Ibiza (45th) and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (50 °). All lost traffic compared to 2011 except Barcelona, with 1.3% more transactions. Nonetheless, in July El Prat lost eighth place off Istanbul-Atatürk, the only major European airport that grew more than 10% compared to last year.
The pan-European air traffic control manager also reported fewer delays compared to July last year. The average delay per flight was 1.67 minutes, 2.77 minutes regarding reported in 2011. Reducing delays is due to decrease delays "en route", caused by lack of airspace capacity, bad weather and "other external problems."
Palma de Mallorca and Madrid are on the list of 20 European airports with the most delays in July, with a daily average of 2.10 and 0.57 minutes per flight respectively. According to Eurocontrol, the large number of flights at Son Sant Joan receives high season surcharge and airport facilities increases the number of delays, while the main problem Barajas is the lack of capacity of air traffic control.
The five busiest European airports in July were Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt, London-Heathrow, Amsterdam and Munich, while the five airlines that operated more flights were Lufthansa, Ryanair, Easyjet, Air France and Turkish Airlines. Among the Spanish lines, Vueling was the 13th, the 18th Iberia, Air Nostrum the 19th and the 34th Air Europa.
