The Canary Islands government has decided to open in summer 132 schools to over 8,000 school children can take their lunch in the dining center. This measure, which will be used for 1.2 million euros, is part of a social action plan, once it was found that a large number of students can not afford to pay the fee for this service. In addition schools will offer language classes and sports activities which will benefit up to 12,000 students. This measure announced by President Canaries, Paulino Rivero, is given by the high levels of material deprivation recorded in the archipelago, which in the case of child poverty stood at 29%, nine points above the EU average European and four from the rest of Spain. In this regard, the Minister of Education, José Miguel Pérez, explained that the emergency plan is based on a combined action since not only seek additional training during the summer months for students but also seeks to meet the objective of Islands that no child is left without receiving service dining.
"We found that about 8,000 students whose families have requested room service or been discharged because they can not afford it so we will not allow anyone to be left out of the room because they can not cope with the costs "said Perez. Similarly, the head of the area of Education warned that it will take "special care" for the service provided in the dining during the summer months does not believe inequalities among students. "It is important to note that this measure will not signal any student for not paying the dining room, but we intend to dilute the differences," he added. At present, a total of 70,426 students make use of school canteens in the Canary Islands, of which the government subsidizes almost 37,000 children. However, the precarious economic situation of many families suffering makes it impossible to take the school meal fee, estimated at an average of 1.90 euros per child per day.
Another social measures announced by Paulino Rivero, is an emergency plan to reduce waiting lists in hospitals, which currently amount to 29,675 patients waiting to undergo surgery, which is an increase from 9 % compared to 2012. In order to avoid this situation, the Government has announced the hiring of a total of 140 people who will open the operating room during the afternoon, reducing the waiting time for surgery that sometimes can reach seven months.
