Google France Ireland pay the bulk of taxes generated by its European business. The same happens in Spain and other countries. Germany, France and Italy are not willing to allow this any longer. The Finance Division of the French Ministry of Finance has sent a supplementary declaration to Google for the last four years and claims the U.S. giant 1,000 million euros in unpaid taxes. The news published the satirical weekly Le Canard Enchaîné. Google denies having received any communication, and Treasury has simply say you can not confirm nor deny the news to keep the duty to "tax confidentiality".
On Monday, French President François Hollande met with the CEO of Google, at the Elysee, Eric Schmidt, flanked by the Minister of Culture, Aurelie Filipetti, and the Deputy Minister for the Digital Economy, Fleur Pellerin.
Under the smiles of courtesy was in the air war weather underground, very similar to that breathes in Berlin and Rome, whose governments are also trying to force the U.S. company to pay their taxes in the countries where it operates rather than on Ireland, which has its European headquarters in Mountain View consortium, Ireland has a corporate tax rate much lower (12.5%) than that prevailing in the rest of Europe, and has often been accused of dumping-unfair competition- fiscal '.
The Elysee denies that Hollande tuck "tax burden" Google chief executive and chairman clarifies that merely expressed the hope that the Internet contributes to "finance the contents in each territory" where it operates, and also urged Schmidt to negotiate with the French press publishers to reach an agreement "before year end".
Hollande Schmidt warned that if in two months Google does not reach an agreement with publishers' associations, the government passed a law to regulate business and taxation of Internet companies.
Google has defended itself saying its News page, which uses the information from different French newspapers, no advertising, and claiming that in fact do not hire sales representatives in France. The search engine maintains that its business-management-advertisers is made directly from Ireland.
The problem is that the French tax authorities have discovered that Google has released jobs looking precisely recruit sales agents in France.
Hacienda's claim seems serious. According to Le Canard Enchaîné, the supplementary declaration formalized by the Directorate General of Finance summarizes the findings of research carried out in recent months about the so-called "transfer pricing" between the French branch of the search and the consortium domiciled in Ireland.
During the four years covered by the investigation, Google earned between 1,250 and 1,400 million per year for its activity in France, but said only 138 million and only paid five million corporate tax bill, according to the weekly.
Tax haven
The rest of the money traveled through a series of complicated financial arrangements, to Ireland, and from there was transferred to Bermuda, a known tax haven-through intermediary company in the Netherlands, according to the French weekly information.
The French subsidiary of Google has stated that it will continue cooperating with the French authorities as it has done so far, and added that respects the laws of all the countries where it operates, as well as European rules.
In the United States, the Mountain View company faces a similar investigation, since the benefits listed either in their country of origin. Treble Google tax advisors are admired for their technical "tax optimization".
