The local government of San Francisco voted Tuesday to ban nudity in public spaces, by a narrow majority of six against five supervisors. The new ordinance puts an end to the habit of some residents of the city to meet naked in one of the busiest squares of the famous Castro district, one of the emblems of the gay liberation movement.
Exempted from the ban on female breast and children under five. They also make exceptions for events such as gay pride celebration. Already last year the Board of Supervisors (municipal government) banned in restaurants nudism and naturists forced to place a towel between parts and the banks or the ground on which they feel.
Traditionally, nudists have used the law of the State of California requires that public nudity is legal only when not motivated "acts or lustful thoughts" or if there is no present "others who might be offended or upset" by the act itself. In a city as tolerant as San Francisco, it was difficult to find any neighbor that bothered him private parts to another passerby. So nudity was common there.
"The nudity in Castro has become something extreme," said the supervisor that prompted the ordinance, Scott Wiener, before the vote on Tuesday, reports The New York Times. The violations are fined with $ 100 (about 78 euros). Recurrences, with 200. Further, sanctions will be imposed $ 500 and may be requested up to a year in prison for violating the ordinance.
Last Wednesday, two dozen nudists marched in protest to the local government headquarters. A lawyer who represents them, Christina DiEdoardo, filed a lawsuit on behalf of the protesters to stop the ordinance, according to Reuters. "What the city is trying to do is to impose a dress code by legal means, in a criminal way," he said. "My clients try to prevent the Board of Supervisors act unconstitutionally".
