Company and employee representatives have signed this morning the agreement ending the 20-day strike in garbage collection in Jerez. Neighbors urgently asked the beginning of the collection of more than 3,000 tons accumulated in the streets and so last night, despite the agreement in principle, reaffirmed their discomfort by the accumulation of waste and caused numerous fires that forced firefighters to make 70 outputs. One of these fires lit a tin roof of a house in the Sanabria Lake Street in Nazareth this neighborhood.
The mayor of Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), María José García-Pelayo (PP), has called for calm after the agreement and has agreed to return to normal in the city "soon".
Workers will double shifts to clean the city this week. The committee chairman, John Cazalla, believes that the conflict has dragged on without having the final deal because their initial demands. "If the mayor had intervened earlier, the city would not have been turned upside down," he said.
In the last three weeks of unemployment of workers who have managed to avoid laying off 129 companions, one third of the workforce, there has been destruction of 280 containers, which will cost 280,000 euros. The template, which has to ratify the agreement in assembly, had nothing to do with these incidents.
The mayor has called "apology" to Jerez in an interview with RNE. Finally, it was agreed to reduce the cost of service of 20% and in 2013 the City will pay 4.5 million euros less for garbage collection.
Pelayo Garcia acknowledged that the riots were followed to hire an outside company (Tragsa) to "support minimum services", but it was justified in its "duty" to minimize the effects of accumulated garbage in the city.
The Minister of the Presidency of the Board, Susana Diaz, has described as "unfortunate" that the mayor of Jerez, María José García-Pelayo (PP), has "taken twenty days" to "sit with the workers" and end garbage strike in the city.
