Japan has decided to stop importing wheat from the United States, while the European Union has announced controls and has alerted its member states due to the detection of an unauthorized GM on a farm in Oregon. Genetic variation was introduced by Monsanto, a leader in the sector, although the company suspended the program nine years ago over the protests of environmentalists and industry. Signature Sources say the finding is "unexpected" and that there are "reasonable grounds" to believe that, if confirmed the validity of the tests, the presence of the product is very limited.
15 years ago, Monsanto began field testing to bring to market the so-called Roundup Ready, a gene that would allow the cereal tolerate Roundup, a herbicide glyphosate compound is marketed by the same company, and otherwise kill to the plant. Although the company employs this technique with corn and soybeans, in 2004 decided to suspend the program that would culminate with the first GM wheat. According to information provided by the firm, at that time acted rigorously. Now, the Department of Agriculture of the United States has encountered this variation on a farm of about 30 acres in Oregon. Monsanto makers have refused to explain what could have happened.
Company sources ensure that no safety problems in food, feed and the environment associated with the presence of the Roundup Ready gene, "if this is found in wheat". In 2004 he found, however, opposed by environmental groups, farmers, consumers, religious and foreign buyers, who argued alleged health risks, possible occurrence of herbicide-resistant weeds and the fear that a few multinationals will control the major crops in the world.
Although most of the production in Oregon is intended for the Asian market, the European Commission has warned Spain-main buyer, and other EU countries-importers buy each year one million tons of wheat from the U.S.. It has also requested an explanation from the company and urged those responsible to provide a valid method to detect the presence of this GM, to which Monsanto has responded with "full cooperation", reports Europa Press.
Company sources say that they will work with the Department of Agriculture of the United States to confirm the test results and determine the next steps. Also undertake to conduct a "thorough investigation" to validate the scope and deal with any presence of Roundup Ready gene in commercial wheat seeds.
