Spain is the fourth country in the EU where the mobile phone is more expensive, only surpassed by the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium. Spanish mobile subscribers pay 13.3 cents per minute of voice, well above the EU average (9.1 cents), according to the annual report on telecommunications issued Wednesday by the Commission.
Average revenue per mobile customer in Spain amounts to 229 euros, also widely surpassing the EU average (195 euros), according to 2011 data. The countries where mobile telephony is cheaper are Lithuania (1.9 cents per minute), Romania (2.2 cents) and Latvia (3.5 cents).
Among the large EU countries, the best prices are in Italy (6.9 cents) and Germany (8.8 cents).
Spain is below the EU average broadband both fixed and the mobile. The penetration rate of fixed broadband in January 2013 was 24.8% (compared to 28.8% on average in the EU) and with growth of just 0.1 points over the previous year.
In addition, the proportion of high-speed connections (at least 30 megs) is also below average (10.2% vs. 14.8%) and ultrafast connections (at least 100 megs) represent only 1.9% of subscriptions (3.4% in the EU).
However, Spain has lost ground in mobile broadband, where he lead the EU rankings. Thus, the 3G penetration rate stood at 54.1% in January 2013, slightly below the average of 54.5% in the EU. Now leading countries are Denmark, Finland and Sweden, where the penetration rate approaches or exceeds 100%.
Spain is also below the EU average rate of professionals engaged in information technology and communication (3.3% of total labor force vs. 3.8%) and the percentage citizens who use e-commerce (31% versus 45% on average in the EU).
