The austerity measures in Spain could be a dismantling of much of the health system and significantly damage the health of the population, according to a study published Thursday in the British Medical Journal, one of the most prestigious medical journals in the world.
Researchers who have analyzed the situation warn that if the trend does not change, there is a risk that in Spain loop is created health problems that could lead to an increase in infectious diseases such as tuberculosis or HIV.
An analysis of the interview consisted of 34 doctors and nurses from Catalonia. Most claimed he was "shocked, lethargic and disappointed" with the cuts, and some expressed fear that the adjustments "kill people", say the researchers.
"For five years, policies to solve the financial crisis have been based only on economic indicators," said Martin McKee, Professor of European Public Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and one of the investigators. "Our work sheds light on the burden of human suffering that these policies have involved".
The report explains that the cuts of nearly 14% nationwide and 10% at regional level in health and social services in 2012 have coincided with an increase in the demand for care, especially by the elderly, and sick With Disabilities.
The researchers also noted an increase in depression, diseases related to alcoholism and suicide in Spain since the beginning of the crisis and increased unemployment.
"If this is not corrected, it is likely to increase diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis, as we have seen in Greece where too much has been cut in Health. Specific danger of increased drug resistance" said Helena Legido-Quigley, a professor who also participated in the study.
What has been found in Spain is consistent with other studies in Europe and the United States say that the cuts are having a devastating effect on health, leading to suicide, depression, infectious diseases and reduced access to medicines and care.
In a book published last April, there were 10,000 suicides and one million cases of depression since the Great Recession and austerity measures have been implemented in Europe and the United States.
The British Medical Journal study perceived that Spain already had one of the lowest budgets of the European Union in healthcare compared to their GDP. The report warns that the new dependency and pension cuts will so vulnerable to these groups in a situation of even greater risk.
