The European Parliament today adopted a resolution that calls on the Commission to reduce the presence of certain chemicals known as "endocrine disrupters", which can be very harmful to health. MPs have called for reducing human exposure to these substances due to the increase in the number of patients suffering from diseases related to hormonal and reproductive disorders.
Parliament calls on the Commission to develop an EU strategy in this field by mid-2015, although the first interim EDs list should be published by December 2014, say MEPs. "This resolution is intended to identify the mechanisms to be taken to address this issue, the use of EDs.
"It is time that concrete steps are taken in this matter," said the rapporteur, Swedish socialist Asa Westlund, after the resolution was adopted by 489 votes in favor, 102 against and 19 abstentions.
Endocrine disrupters are a number of chemicals that contain steroids, some pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs, according to its acronym in English), dioxins and plastics or synthetic additives. Are found in the composition of some tissues, as well as building materials, plastics, toys, containers or cosmetics. Pose a serious threat to pregnant women, children and youths whose hormonal systems are more vulnerable to these substances.
Due to the increased number of hormonal disorders in the past 20 years, the Parliament voted to reduce human exposure to these substances, which can cause hormonal and reproductive disorders, breast or testicles, congenital malformations or disorders neurological development, among others.
MEPs also call for stronger research on these substances and to establish a protocol for identification and description. They also point out that there is no scientific basis to set a threshold value below which no adverse effects, so it must be considered that endocrine disrupters are substances "no threshold" and that any exposure can be hazardous to unless the manufacturer can provide evidence that this threshold exists.
