Five of the eight cases of Legionnaire's second outbreak of the disease reported in the Diamond Beach Hotel in Calpe (Alicante) are locals, as confirmed today the Government of Valencia. The Madrid Health Ministry also confirmed cases, three of whom remain hospitalized at the Hospital Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda. These are three people who apparently were on holiday in the Alicante hotel and started to feel sick to return to Madrid. The Iron Gate confirms that these are two women and one elderly man.
The Ministry of Health is conducting an epidemiological investigation, in addition to being made by the Generalitat Valenciana, by Epidemiological questionnaires to those affected to determine possible sources of exposure to the bacteria. The University Hospital of Pozuelo de Alarcón Chiron is studying a possible case, according to a spokesman. The fifth hit is hospitalized Montepríncipe of Carr. The five patients are diagnosed clinically, ie by urine test and still awaiting the lab results.
The Diamante Beach Hotel Calpe is the same that killed last January 3 British because of legionella. An outbreak of this disease affected about fifteen people, forcing them to close the hotel between 2 and 10 February and to perform work of disinfection. The Valencian Government has informed this morning that does not rule out that in the coming days appear new cases and ensured that the health of those affected is improving. The hotel was again closed and the guests have been relocated to other hotels in the municipality.
Family affected by legionella today expressed outrage at the "irresponsibility" of health authorities, which allowed the reopening of this property which killed three people in February. This has been reported Efe Ginés Prieto, whose aunt Adelina, 79, and Avelina, 86, are admitted to the Hospital Puerta de Hierro in Madrid suffering from pneumonia for legionella.
Both participated last week in a trip to Calpe Imserso with local residents of Carr (Madrid) and, in return, began to feel "very bad, with a fever that reached 39 degrees and were" admitted to emergency "in the health center.
Prieto was asked why he has allowed the reopening of this facility, whose closure was ordered in February, without finding that he had been properly disinfected, older people also staying "more risk" of serious illness due to bacteria . "It seems that someone cares more about money than the health of people and does not care who has killed, because Legionella is a very serious disease," he asserted.
He warned that "the number of people affected will gradually increase," although the Puerta de Hierro hospitals and Chiron Clinic, where according to this source there are four admitted, "speak with great caution." The family has criticized "the tremendous irresponsibility not only the hotel but health authorities" and, therefore, has called for "responsibilities". Prieto stressed that his aunts had a "rude health" and that they were "perfectly" before staying at this hotel supposedly infected by the same bacteria that hit earlier this year to eighteen people.
