The effect of tourism on employment or has lost its momentum effect is not powerful enough to combat the force of gravity that seems to put the job loss. The second quarter usually shows a rise in employment and falling unemployment in the tourist communities. The data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE) this morning show an increase in unemployment in Andalusia almost to the ceiling of 34% unemployment (33.92%). This increase is due to a fall in employment of 23,300 people. Although increased hiring in the tourism sector has not offset the fall in employment in agriculture and especially the loss of public employment. Canary, another traditionally autonomy where unemployment also fell at this time, suffers an increase in unemployment of 2.32% and the unemployment rate rises to 33.14%.
However, other coastal communities experience a slight improvement driven primarily by increased employment. Baleares (-20.59%) and Catalonia (-1.84%) communities where unemployment lower. In Valencia and Murcia, two tourist-based communities, unemployment also fell slightly. Balearic is also the fastest growing community where the occupation of the tourism sector contracts.
The trend of employment and occupation data shows ever more clearly the difference between the two Spains: the north, which weathers the storm with more ease; and south, where the hole is still growing. As unemployment falls in the communities of the northern half of the country and in coastal areas (in the Balearics is reduced by 20.59% to lower the unemployment rate to 21.37%), in Cantabria, up by 8, 33% to put the unemployment rate at 17.38%, and in Catalonia, 1.84% to 21.95%), the autonomous territories of the South are more difficult to digest the impact of recession on employment. Andalusia unemployment rises 2.50%, in Extremadura, 3.67% and the Canary Islands 2.32%. The exception to this division of the peninsula, this quarter, is Basque country, where unemployment grew by 7.7% to put unemployment at 14.56%, the lowest in Spain.

The increased destruction of jobs despite the tourist season compounds the problem of unemployment in communities hardest hit by the crisis. In Ceuta, the unemployment rate already exceeds 39.47%, while there are three communities that also exceed the 30% unemployment: Andalusia (33.92%), Canary Islands (33.14%) and Extremadura (33.38 %). In Melilla, the unemployment rate stands at 30.38%.
The greatest decreases in occupancy this quarter were in Andalucía (23,300 fewer employed), Castilla-La Mancha (19,500) and Catalonia (19,100). However, increasing employment in the Balearic Islands (60400), Comunidad de Madrid (7,500), Murcia (6,800), Castilla y León (5,600) and Valencia (4,900).
