The entry into force of health co-payment system has been one of the main factors that have led to the rise in inflation in July, which has risen three tenths to 2.2% from the same month of 2011. After two months without changes, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) reached its highest level and the year, according to advance data on price developments in Spain has today published National Statistics Institute (INE). The statistical office reconece in his brief statement that "this result highlights the rise in prices of medicines and other pharmaceutical products."
The co-payment system is based on income and compelling for the first time to 7.5 million pensioners, the Basque Country are exempt-time to pay a percentage (10%) of their medications with a monthly cap of 8, 16 or 60 euros.
The July figures are the highest since December last year
The July figure includes, in this sense, the increased spending of citizens to purchase drugs, which is precisely what measures the INE and is the highest level for the CPI since December last year, when annual inflation stood at 2.4%. If confirmed, the final data will be published on 14 August, although not usually vary by more than a tenth-this break with the trend rise in May and June, months in which inflation remained at 1.9% .
The rally, on the other hand, contrasts with the worsening economic recession in the second quarter, as confirmed by data released Monday by the INE, which point to a fall in GDP of 0.4% between April and June .
The rising price of some medicines contrasts with the decline recorded in July last year, when became cheaper by 2.5%, thus amplifying their impact on the inflation data this year. So far, the highest level of inflation was achieved in April, when inflation reached 2.1% by rising electricity.
The Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), which measures changes in prices by the same method in all euro area countries, increased four tenths off the June rate to 2.2%. The July data reduces the differential with other countries in the region, which hampers Spanish exports.
The forecasts for the coming months are not encouraging: the increase in VAT and the consequent higher cost of electricity and gas bills, among others, could push inflation to a new annual record.
