Mobile telephony in April lost 254,446 lines in what was the fourth consecutive month of declines, according to the latest Post Monthly Market Commission (CMT). In line with the previous two months, the declines by Movistar, Vodafone and Telstra did not offset gains from other mobile operators. Broadband was the only segment that managed to increase its customer base, winning 33,260 lines and enroll 10 consecutive months of gains.
With respect to balances operators, Movistar lost 204,616 lines, 196,122 left Vodafone and Telstra declined by 6,927 lines. The set of virtual operators gained 130,360 net adds of 22,859 joined and Orange lines this month.
The declines in recent months for the whole industry have located the park mobile lines at 55.99 million, representing an increase of only 0.2% over the same month of 2011. Since November 2011, the number of lines (voice + data cards) has fallen by almost a million lines (939,034 lines). The lower activity has also been noticeable in portability, changing the number ported, which in May reached 329,200 company changes, a figure considerably less than half a million mobile phone number exchanges that occurred in late 2011.
Broadband is noted a rise in 32,260 lines, the tenth month on the rise. Meanwhile, Telefónica chained in May (8270) two consecutive months of surplus. The May 8280 net adds were obtained thanks to the marketing of the fiber to the home (FTTH), which recorded an increase of 10,615 lines (almost all of this operator), since in Telefónica ADSL lines lost in May 2125.
A month alternative operators (mainly traders ADSL) led gains and attracted 25,660 new lines, leaving them with a market share of 32.21% versus 48.69% of Telefónica, which in the past 12 months lost 2.5 points of share. Cable operators lost 670 lines. The total customer base of broadband lines stood at 11,291,156, representing a penetration of 24.5 lines per 100 inhabitants (0.9 lines more than a year ago).
As regards fixed telephony, in April lost 48,493 lines. The business segment, with a fall of 39,887 lines, was worse off, while the park residential segment decreased in 8606 lines. Fixed portability, largely associated changes to packet voice operator and broadband lines was 136,000, slightly higher than in April (131,534), although far from the 160,000 earlier this year.
