E-commerce set a new record turnover in 2011 after joining between January and December, 9.201 million euros. This figure is 25.70% higher than in 2010 (year to 7.318 million euros turnover) and 60% higher than in 2009 (with a turnover of 5.752 million euros). The data derive from E-Commerce Report of the Fourth Quarter 2011, published by the CMT and posted online purchases made by credit card.
In the fourth quarter of 2011 (October to December), the turnover was EUR 2.401 million, representing a growth of 25.7% (coincident with that of the whole year). However, in this period, the revenue growth experienced a slight slowdown, as revenues were lower (0.85% less) than the previous quarter. This had not happened since the first quarter of 2009.
By number of transactions in the fourth quarter marked a new historical change when reaching the 36.9 million transactions. Moreover, in all of 2011 were made 131.0 million buys, representing a growth of 30.9% over the previous year.
More shopping in Spain than in the outside
In the fourth quarter of 2011, the turnover of purchases of the Spanish in Spanish shops again exceeded the turnover of purchases of Spanish to foreign businesses, as occurred for the first time in the third quarter. The turnover in Spain was of 1,063 million euros (44.2% of total), while that of the Spanish abroad was EUR 1,043 million (43.4% of total).
Despite this, the Spanish trade balance (exports less what it imported) turned negative again in the fourth quarter. Specifically, the deficit amounted to 746.4 million euros. This is because the turnover of purchases from abroad to Spanish businesses was EUR 296.2 million (12.3% of total), much lower than what the Spanish bought out.
More unfavorable to the Spanish trade is the geographical distribution by number of operations. In this case, the number of transactions of Spanish who bought abroad accounted for 52.0% of the total (19.2 million operations), so it exceeded the number of operations they bought in Spanish Spanish shops, the 40.6% of the total (14.0 million transactions). Furthermore, with 2.7 million transactions, the weight of the export was 7.4% of total transactions.
Industries
In the whole of 2011, travel agencies and airline ranked first and second respectively in the ranking of industries by turnover. Between the two accounted for 26.5% of total turnover of electronic commerce. Direct marketing (with 6.7%) and transport (with 5.9%) were in the third and fourth respectively. Gambling and betting were in fifth place with 4.4% of total turnover.
In the fourth quarter in particular, tourism also copaba the top turnover. The three main branches of this sector accounted for 28.5% of e-commerce revenue, although its weight was reduced by one point from a year ago (when accounted for 29.5% of total).
The branch of music downloads, sound, image and appliances kept the top ranking by number of operations for the fourth quarter, with 10.1% of total transactions. Since reaching the first position in the first quarter of 2011 has not abandoned. It is followed by direct marketing, which, with 8.4% of operations, was runner after scaling a position on the quarter and year.
Special mention clothing, in the fourth quarter climbed two places in the ranking by turnover from the previous quarter and the year before. Managed fifth place with 5.1% of total turnover of electronic commerce, representing revenues of 123.4 million euros. A year ago, in the fourth quarter of 2010, turnover for this sector was 76.4 million euros, 4.0% of total e-commerce. Garments also improved position for number of operations, as they went from tenth place in the third quarter to eighth in the room. In addition, in 2010 this branch never ranked among the top ten ranking for number of operations.
