Birth control pills should be sold without a prescription. This is the conclusion of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and that has been advanced in the online edition of the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology. The reason is that against the "public health problem" posed by unwanted pregnancies, the risks of these medicines are less, and women can-with or without the help of pharmacists-a checkup to determine their risk factors .
The scientific society committee that has studied the case qualifies-as, moreover, it is common-that this recommendation is subject to change if the knowledge gathered subsequently discouraged.
"No medication or medical intervention has zero risk," the authors of the recommendation. "For example, a common anti-inflammatory such as aspirin, have adverse effects such as gastrointestinal bleeding," added as an introduction before focusing on birth control pills. The pattern in the case of these drugs is repeated: "Fears oral contraceptives often focus on the risk of venous thromboembolism," they say. But, "in any case, it is important to note that the proportion" of this adverse effect "is extremely low", and give a figure of between 3 and 10.22 cases per 10,000 women per year. And the important thing is that the risk of suffering the same process is almost double during pregnancy (between 5 and 20 per 10,000 women per year) and even higher in the postpartum period (40 to 65 cases per 10,000 women). Therefore, "the consensus is that oral contraceptive use is safe," they conclude.
