Retail sales now total 28 months down and mark their third worst result so far this year. In October, recorded a fall of 9.7% from the same period of 2011, after deducting the difference in the number of working days in the month in different years, as reported on Wednesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE ). The variation of the General Index of Retail Trade in relation to September is 5.6%, the highest rate in the last five years.
The data developed from the start of the fourth quarter, the second month after the entry into force of the VAT increase, show that household consumption remains weak in an economy in recession since late 2011.
The Bank of Spain said that the information relating to the fourth quarter is still very scarce. "The available data suggest that the product will continue to fall in the final months of the year when there will be the reversal of the effect of anticipation that meant spending the VAT hike in September," he says.
Employment in the retail sector marks an annual decline of 1.2%
Both household confidence as retail trade registered a modest advance in October. Among the quantitative indicators, only have the information of private car registrations in October, which achieved moderate its fall to 21.7% after the September collapse, thanks to aid implemented by the Government through PIVE plan.
All modes of distribution marked declines, although the big chains limited the drop to 2.6%. While food sales posted declines of 3.1%, household equipment plummet 14.9%.
Sales at constant prices, eliminating the effect of prices, were down 8.4%, more than four points above the rate recorded in September. Excluding gas stations, where sales fell 11.2%, the annual growth was 7.9%.
Employment in the retail sector also suffered losses, with an annual decline of 1.2%, one tenth below the September figure. Again, the big chains were the only means of saving, to increase its number of employees by 1%.
All the regions showed negative annual rates, led by Murcia (12.2%), La Rioja (10.4%) and Castilla-La Mancha (10%), while Extremadura (4%), Aragon (5.6% ) and Galicia (6%) limited their falls.
