The cover, made of steel and concrete by the French consortium (Novarka), is a spectacular arch 105 meters high, 150 long and 260 meters wide that enfold the building containing the reactor and also the first sarcophagus was built after the accident, which is degraded over time and is at risk of collapse.
Inside the plant is more than 90% of the nuclear fuel, around 800 tons, and 70,000 tons of highly polluting substances. The first sarcophagus was intended to curb pollution arose shortly after the accident with 10,000 tons of metal structures and more than 30,000 cubic meters of concrete, and the builders said they stand the test of time. But in early 90s the first cracks were detected and scientists warned of a high risk of leakage.
The Government of Ukraine, where between 6,000 and 8,000 people have died as a direct consecuecia incident and another 150,000 have received dangerous doses of radiation, an international tender for the construction of a second sarcophagus which was awarded in 2007 to Novarka.
