The unions represented in Iberia announced Thursday the six days notice of strike against austerity plan presented by the management of the airline, which provides for the dismissal of 4,500 workers (23% of the workforce), and to request a future plan for the company. The demonstrations will include ground staff and cabin crew, but not the pilots, who currently prefer to stay pending a settlement of the legal dispute they have with Iberia following the commencement of operations of low cost Iberia Express.
The purpose of the demonstrations is to "prevent the dismantling of Iberia and prevent unnecessary dismissal of over 4,500 workers," have said the general secretary of the UGT airline industry, Francisco Rodriguez in a press conference which was also attended representatives of the other four union organizers (CC OO, USE, SITCPLA and Asetma).
The unions, which are planning "materialize" the call on Monday, have said they are "willing to negotiate" but have influenced that there must be "an alternative plan based on growth." "We hope that we sit before day 14, day 14 did not expect to negotiate. Nobody likes to get to day 14 and to strike," said the secretary general of the CCOO Air Sector, José Antonio Herráez that explained they are engaging with Public Works and the parliamentary groups of PSOE, IU and PP.
The template rejects a reduction of the activity of the carrier
The representatives of the workers wanted to avoid the days surrounding the holidays and weekends to try to minimize the impact on passengers. Now you have to make a minimum service. The company will try to relocate in other flights to affected travelers or refund the ticket if you can not.
The staff of the airline merged with British Airways through IAG holding since 2011, is convinced that the measures proposed by Iberia involve the dismantling of the company. In addition to the layoffs, the plan envisages setting routes reduced 15% in 2013, including those linking Spain and Latin America, its key market. Iberia unions are unwilling to negotiate with the management of the airline an adjustment plan that includes a reduced activity because they believe it would mean the death of the company.
The CEO of Iberia, Rafael Sanchez-Lozano, has stressed these days the company is willing to reach agreements by the template and, for this, accept changes to its proposal. But it marked a red line: the company to improve its operating results in 600 million by 2015. "If the unions know how to do that without layoffs, I hear," he said at a meeting with journalists. The company, which has a deadline of January 31 to discuss measures with unions, believes that before calling strikes, you should try to negotiate.
Before talking about the adjustment plan, the pilots want the issuance of a new award on the situation of Iberia Express. The union is awaiting the execution of the judgment of the High Court's November 2 that annulled the award, given by Professor Jaime Montalvo in May and ending the conflict between Iberia and Sepla, and orders issue again.
Iberia wants to spend to spend € 1,300 million a year in labor costs to disburse 850 million. The savings of 450 million would not only reduce the workforce by 4,500 people, but also include pay cuts of an average of between 25% and 35% for workers who remain in the company. The drop in pay "would gradually" until 2015. Those who suffer more cuts would, in principle, the drivers (could reach 47%).
