PSA Peugeot Citroen Group announced today it will close its plant in the French town of Aulnay, who has 38 years of history, amid falling sales in Europe, which has led to the second manufacturer in Europe to suffer operational losses. The measure forms part of a restructuring plan designed to make the company more competitive and complete with another 8,000 layoffs, as announced on Thursday Pierre-Olivier Salmon, CEO of the group. The cut is in addition to reducing the workforce by 6,000 workers in 2010 Peugeot has announced.
The decision follows, according to the company said in a statement, the degradation of the joint European market in the first half of the year in which the production of Peugeot, "very exposed to Southern Europe," has made a 18%. The average rate of utilization of European companies in the group fell to 76% in those six months, compared to 86% in the same period last year, while expected losses of 700 million euros in operating income from January to June. For this reason, closed the factory, will reduce production at the plant in Rennes.
Automakers had not closed any plants in France during the last 30 years since Renault in 1982 took an identical decision.
The overcapacity of the European producers on the continent is a regular topic of discussion in the sector. In fact, OPEL also announced in March it plans to close two of its plants in Europe in order to reduce its manufacturing capacity by 30%.
