The origin of this disease is found in the bacterium Legionella pneumophila. Not spread from person to person. The bacterium colonizes cooling towers or other devices containing water temperatures warm, encouraging them to multiply. The disease is spread by inhaling aerosols (droplets) that carry microorganisms.
Madrid suffered in October and November of 2010 one of the worst outbreaks of legionnaires lived in Spain. There were 47 infections. Health inspectors combed for days the districts of Central and Retirement in search of the outbreak of the infection. The victims had in common that they lived, worked or had gone through one of those areas. On November 27, 2010 Health closed the outbreak and did not provide any information, although later there was a fatality more. In total, six people died.

Its mortality rate was 12.6%, while the average of the 501 recorded outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease in Spain was 4.1% (138 deaths). Between 2006 and 2008 only two outbreaks were reported with 10 or more cases, according to a report of the National Epidemiology Center November 2010.
