The researcher Nadezda Apostolova, 34, was named best young pharmacologist in Europe, the Federation of European Societies of Pharmacology. Apostolova has spent the last three years of his career on the side effects of Efavirenz, a popular antiretroviral used to treat HIV. As she explains, her work is to study the damage that this drug produced in the liver and the metabolism of those who consume it. For that work in a group composed of ten other scientists in the Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Valencia. The team is also dedicated to the analysis of antiretrovirals and is led by Professor John Esplugues.
Research, clearly passionate about Apostolova. So he left his native Macedonia to find a better destination in which to develop his career. He arrived in Spain on a scholarship, ten years ago and has remained in the country partly because he married and obtained a Spanish citizenship.
Cut in health care is too risky, because if you cut, people die
Nadezda Apostolova
Apostolova emphasizes that when he decided to come to Spain to continue his studies took into consideration the high level of science in the country, as well as the quality of life that it offered. So today is concerned about the cuts that are occurring in science and health.
"It is clear that the current cuts are necessary, but what happens to the health and education is different. The cuts in these sectors produce negative effects. Cut in health is very risky, because if you cut, people are dying" he says Apostolova.
"For new projects have merit and need to achieve these research is needed merits. But there is no budget for research or for technical or internship," he laments.
The brain drain is inevitable. Even inevitable, is a reality
Nadezda Apostolova
On a scientific level is concerned that fewer resources devoted to science involving a reversal of the progress the country had achieved in recent years in this area. "Spain at some point was the recipient of brains of people like me. And right now I do not come," he says.
"The brain drain is inevitable. Not even inevitable, is a reality," says the researcher, who does not rule out having to leave the country after the end of the Juan de la Cierva contract with that account.
For now, Apostolova will remain dedicated to the study medication. He argues that although in the last 30 years have made great strides in the fight against HIV this is still a pandemic globally. Ensures that there is still much to do and so I can bring rewards, which she considers "a bit".

Nadezda Apostolova
Nadezda Apostolova
