Enric Fernandez and Gonyalons Ainhoa, the two aid workers kidnapped nine months ago by an Islamist group in the Saharawi refugee camps in Tindouf (Algeria), landed late in the afternoon of Thursday, smiling, at the airbase of Torrejon de Ardoz in Madrid. There they waited for their families and the Deputy Prime Minister, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria.
To reach that happy ending, which includes the release of Italian aid Urru Rosella, who on Thursday arrived in Rome, has required the commitment of third countries to release three Islamist radicals.
Fernandez and Gonyalons had embarked late on Thursday morning at the airport in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, in an Air Force plane en route to Madrid, accompanied by secret service agents who negotiated his release mediators through Burkina Faso.
The two aid workers were captured, along with Urru on 23 October last year Rabuni, administrative headquarters of the Polisario Front, the Movement for the Unity of the Jihad in West Africa (MUYAO), whose leader, Mohamed Ould Mauritanian Hicham said yesterday at the Spanish agency EFE that "all conditions were met" by Spain and Italy. The MUYAO is a splinter terrorist group al Qaeda.
After regrouping the hostages had separate women from men-the MUYAO presented in Gao, the main city of northern Mali, the three captives to a delegation sent there by Burkinabe President, Blaise Compaoré. From Gao were transferred to Burkina Faso. On behalf of the three ex-hostages, Urru thanked President Compaore for his efforts.
The Mauritanian news agency Agence Nouachott Information and Sahara Media, which have a long history of exclusive on regional terrorism, said that in exchange for releasing donors, the government pledged to release Nouakchott two Islamists, who stopped in Nouadhibou on Dec. 5 for his complicity in the abduction of Rabuni. The Government of Niger had agreed to do the same with another prisoner.
So far, only one of three prisoners, Mamine Ould Oufkir, has been released. Born 30 years ago in a Sahrawi refugee camp. Sahara Media says a Spanish military plane picked him up to his release from prison in Nouakchott for delivery to the Burkinabe delegation, who moved to Gao, where he was traded by the donors.
Both agencies require that Spain and Italy have also paid jointly a ransom of between two and three million euros, ie ten times less than required by the MUYAO initially.
To release, in August 2010, three hostages captive Catalan Maghreb branch of Al Qaeda, was necessary to obtain the release of one of the accomplices of that kidnapping, imprisoned in Nouakchott.
