The number of patients on surgical waiting list of the National Health Service (NHS) has increased by 17.2 percent last year from 392,072 patients in 2010 to 459,885 as of December 2011, according to data collected by the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equal and approved for distribution in the Interterritorial Council on Wednesday.
The maximum access to these benefits has also increased compared to 2010 data in 8 days, from 65-day waiting period to 73 December 2011 average. Similarly increased the percentage of patients who take more than six months on the waiting list, from 5.4 percent to 9.9 percent from last report. Specialties with more patients awaiting surgery are: Traumatoogía (126,688), followed by Ophthalmology (92,541) and General Surgery (87152). In these cases are waiting days 83, 64 and 71 days respectively. Moreover, the specialties with more days of waiting are: Plastic Surgery, Thoracic Surgery and Neurosurgery, 98, 95 and 90 days average out. Below the mean, besides ophthalmology, dermatology are (42 days) and Gynecology (56 days).
With respect to 2010, especially the expected increased on days to 18 days Thoracic, followed Angiology and Vascular Surgery has seen an increase in waiting time of up to 15 days with 12 days Neurosurgery in 2011.
As the number of patients, the largest increase in 2011 occurred in Trauma where 26,367 patients were recorded difference from 2010. General Surgery and Ophthalmology, also greatly exceeded the number of patients with previous year
(14,095 and 12,266, respectively).
