Vodafone has confirmed plans Tuesday to cut jobs in Spain. The mobile operator has submitted a dossier of employment regulation (ERE) for up to 900 workers out of a total of 4,300 employees and it has been communicated to the representatives of the workers, as reported by the company.
Vodafone has said the workforce adjustment corresponds to a transformation plan to achieve a more competitive structure, adapted to the current reality of the communications sector in Spain and the economic environment. The ERE negotiation process has begun this morning with union representatives.
"Vodafone Spain, given the impact such measures generate, act with the utmost sensitivity both to the trade, as with the rest of the organization," the note concludes.
In March, Vodafone Spain and unions reached an agreement to sign a new agreement, which provided for a two-week temporary ERE in fiscal year 2012-2013, for the period of April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013.
The negotiating parties also agreed to reduce by 10% the salary variable. Also, the company headed by Francisco Román reported in late 2012 the collective agreement, an extension of that ruling, which suggested to the unions in the possibility of pay cuts or layoffs occur. The company said at the time that I just wanted to be free to take any decision. Service revenues of Vodafone Spain in the first half of its fiscal year have fallen 11%.
Vodafone has already explained to the unions in the past concerns about the decline in revenues that is affecting the Spanish subsidiary as well as the whole sector. But the operator, after losing customers steadily since January 2012, stopped this trend in November, coinciding with the launch of Vodafone network but, above all, with its aggressive ADSL offerings. Thanks to them, in November said more than 3,000 customers and in December exceeded 4,200.
