The European Association of Newspaper Publishers (ENPA), which represents more than 5,200 newspapers, has expressed concern at the recommendations studied to Neelie Kroes, European Commission Vice President for the High Level Group on Press Freedom and Pluralism. In its conclusions, the group of experts, led by the former President of Latvia Vaira Vike-Freiberga, Brussels recommended to expand its powers of oversight over self-regulation of the editors of the various countries, pra ensure "compliance with European values" , as explained by the Association of Spanish Newspaper Publishers (AEDE) in a statement.
The Norwegian Ivar Rusdal, ENPA president, lamented that, after an intense work, the advisory group has "missed the mark". "The report provides a good initial outline on the basic principles of press freedom and the role of free media in modern democracies, but then experts show distrust of those same principles, especially when it comes to acting against those who undermine these freedoms, "he explained Rusdal.
"The Panel recommends a pan-European political control over the media that reminds political regimes whose abolition required us all a tough fight and pay a heavy price. The editors of independent newspapers never accept that the European Union to exert such control over the press, "he added.
In his round of consultations with industry players, the panel had summoned ENPA, which provided a wealth of information on these matters. Although the final report includes some positive aspects, such as the need for media literacy in schools and misses the true meaning of self-regulation of the media.
The AEDE states that in this issue, the president of ENPA expressed its surprise "by the fact that experts deepen the press and journalism without spending a single word to the role, rights and duties of editors when they personify independence of the media, and are essential for the press to exercise its democratic mission ".
European publishers expect the entire newspaper industry strong and unequivocal response that makes retrain the Commission and the European Parliament on the proposals of the expert group, because if these be approved would represent a serious setback for press freedom in Europe. In the public debate that is expected to generate, ENPA is willing to explain to the European Union responsible for the real needs and realities of the independent press, an industry undergoing profound changes.
