The Spanish publishing 88,349 titles published in 2012, which is down 8% from the previous year, announced today the Federation of Publishing Guilds of Spain (FGEE). In these books, and paper were 64,061 20,079 (22% of total) in digital format, which grows with respect to 2011 to 13% (last year was 17 843). The ISBN agency reported other 4209 works in different media (CD, DVD and audio books). The data highlighted by the FGEE is that of the 535 new publishers that discharge from the ISBN Agency in the past year.
The report notes that the publishing industry moves in Spain annually about 3,000 million euros, 0.7% of GDP and provides direct and indirect employment to over 30,000 people. The 840 companies grouped in FGEE editorials represent about 95% of the sector.
According to data from the ISBN agency, Madrid and Catalonia were the two regions with the highest volume of publishing, with 36,576 titles and 21,757 respectively, followed by Andalusia (10929), Valencia (4854) and Basque Country (2553).
Although fiscal 2011 ended with 103,102 books published, FGEE sources have explained that these figures do not reflect the reality of the publishing because statistics were incorporated into books that had not been listed in previous years, so the fall is that 8%. Fiction books and child and youth-themed represented, respectively, 18% and 11% of the books published.
According to region, Madrid and Catalonia account for 66.03% of the books listed. They are also the highest number of digital titles have been registered, with 10,902 and 3,840 respectively. However, Cantabria, with 42.8%, the community with a higher percentage of digital titles cataloged with respect to the total number of books, followed by Madrid with 29.8%.
For subjects, 18% of the titles listed were for fiction and the like (15 630). These are followed by those of children and adolescents, 9667 (11%), Medicine, 7899 (9%); Society and Social Sciences 7,000 titles (8%), Humanities, 6643 (7%); Literature and Literary Studies, 6273 ( 7%); Arts, 5303 (6%), Economics, Finance, Business and Management, 4260 (5%), law, 3,992 (4.7%), and Lifestyle, Sports and Leisure, 3939 (4.7 %). In all other matters, the titles have been cataloged: Mathematics and Science, 2,480 (2.9%), Health and Personal Development, 2324 (2.7%); Biographies and true stories, 2181 (2.6%) Technology , Engineering and Agriculture, 2,092 (2.5%), and Earth Sciences, Geography and Environment, 1,806 (2.1%).
As co-official languages, the books were published in Catalan in 2012 7.175 (8% of total), followed by those published in Galician, 1,340 (2%), Valencia, 1214 (1%) and Basque, 1,201 (1% ). The number of books translated from other languages amounted to 19,792 and books originally written in English are still the most translated in Spain (52%).
