The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde, said today the data "positive" drop in unemployment in Spain and welcomed the decision of the European authorities to give more time to Madrid to reduce the fiscal deficit.
Lagarde stressed the "positive data" unemployment in Spain released today, which shows a decline in the number of unemployed in May at 98,265, the best in the same month in 1997, but qualified that has components "seasonal".
"The important thing is around the corner in regards to the massive unemployment (of Spain)," said the managing director of the Fund in a conference at the Brookings Institution, referring to the high rate of unemployment in the country, 27%.
He also shared the recommendation of the European Commission in late May give Spain two years, until 2016, to correct its excessive deficit.
Spain needs "more time" to fiscal consolidation, IMF director insisted, after praising again the Spanish government's fiscal efforts.
Finally, Lagarde praised as "creative" the recent agreement between Spain and Germany to facilitate private investment in small and medium Spanish enterprises through loans of 1,000 million euros from the German Credit Bank for Reconstruction and Development .
Bank loans Credit German Spanish SMEs amounted to between 800 and 1,000 million.
During his speech, he reiterated that "the lack of flow of credit to businesses" is one of the main obstacles to economic recovery in the euro zone, "especially in the periphery."
