The National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) has decided not to extend the ban on short selling in the Spanish stock which expired on January 31. This means that from tomorrow February 1 investors may again make bearish bets on listed companies.
The stock supervisor explains that he made this decision "to have sent the facts and circumstances" that led to the decision to extend the ban on 1 November. Then, the body chaired by Elvira Rodriguez opted to keep the limitation adopted by his predecessor, Julio Segura, in July 2012 to understand that the process of recapitalization of the Spanish financial sector had not been completed and therefore lift the restrictions could be a increased volatility in the price of the shares at a sensitive time.
Short sales involve betting on the fall of the stock market price of a particular asset. The most common process is as follows: an investor borrows shares, bonds or currencies to a third party for a specified period in return for an interest rate. Once the loan period the investor will buy back those securities to return them to their owner in the hope that its value has fallen, pointing goodwill. Investors who are more used this operational hedge funds. The CNMV, in different analyzes prepared by the Research Department, had found that the ban on the bearish bets have limited impacts in time and also generates negative side effects such as reduced liquidity in hiring ending titles distorting the correct formation of the stock price.
Investors will closely watch what impact the end of the quote veto Spanish companies. For now, the Ibex 35 has left on Thursday by 2.45%, weighed down mainly by the financial sector. This closes its worst day in little so far this year.
