Santander salary freezes to a "significant portion" of its workforce in Spain
The bank absorbs up 1.25% of the agreement but leaves application payment for inflation

Banco Santander has decided not to implement the salary increase this year by the deviation of CPI employees who received pay higher fixed wage agreement, a move that will affect a "substantial part" of its workers, as explained in sources union.
The entity headed by Emilio Botin has proceeded to increase absorption of 1.25% established by the collective agreement of the bank under personal allowances of staff volunteers. Compensation and salary absorption annuls the wage increase by the deviation of the CPI, which closed in December at 2.9%, in the case of workers who earn above a higher salary as provided in the agreement.
The sources acknowledge that the volunteer staff complement has character "compensable and absorbable" by level rises or established convention. "The company is in the right," they say, and emphasize that supplements are decided on a "unilateral" by the bank.
This possibility of freezing in practice wages of some workers is widespread in the banking sector "forever", according to industry sources have clarified. But Santander began to apply this clause in the agreement for the first time extensively on the misuse of IPC revision in January 2011. The current economic climate and the need to keep costs flat in recent times can motivate this freeze, as explained by experts.
