Chaos threatens Spanish airports. The unions representing ground workers and flight crew Iberia announced Wednesday the 15-day notice of strike, spread between February and March (excluding Easter), to protest harsh austerity plan presented by the airline, that includes laying off up to 4,500 employees, 23% of the workforce, and reduced routes by 15% this year.
Strikes are scheduled 24 hours from 18 to 22 February, the 4 to 8 March and 18 to 22 March, according to union sources. Although the drivers are currently outside of the protest, the impact of the demonstrations will be significant if seconded massively and also can affect other airlines that have contracted with Iberia care services at airports (handling) and Aer Lingus and Lufthansa, or maintenance.
The call for strikes occurs after the meeting ended without agreement that CCOO, UGT, Asetma, USE, SITCPLA and CTA-Flight-representatives of 93% of the workforce of Iberia-held in the morning in the direction of Iberia Interconfederal Service Mediation and Arbitration, body set up by employers and unions to mediate labor disputes. It was the last chance to avoid calling demonstrations, but hardly anyone would bet on the agreement.
After the meeting, the federal secretary of the UGT airline industry, Francisco Rodriguez, told reporters that if they find it necessary to call more strikes back, always respecting Easter. Meanwhile, the human resources director of Iberia, José Luis Romero, insisted that the company remains open to negotiation.
The airline plans to reduce 15% routes this year and eliminate up to 4,500 jobs
Tension has dominated relations between the representatives of the staff and management of the airline since IAG, the holding company that groups Iberia and British Airways since its merger in 2011, announced on November 9 a tough austerity plan to exit losses. Now there was another call for a week of strike last December, just before Christmas, but was canceled after the staff and management of the company reached a tentative agreement on 17 December and sit down to negotiate.
The approach was short. Negotiations broke down Jan. 31, the deadline given by IAG-e "immovable", repeated several times as its chief executive, Willie Walsh, to reach an understanding. The unions rejected the latest proposal launched by Iberia, which placed cutting capacity at 10% instead of 15% initially, and lowered 30% layoffs. In addition, it also entailed a reduction better wages, according to the company.
But the representatives of the workers consider that the proposal was not credible, because the airline maintained its performance objective: improve operating results by 600 million by 2015. In the first nine months of the year, the airline's losses were 262 million.
In the absence of agreement, Iberia decided to go ahead with the difficult adjustment announced last November to exit losses, as decided by the Board of Directors of IAG at a meeting on February 1. The hiring manager recalled the latest improvements in the proposed deal on the last day of January.
Trade unions believe that Iberia is directed from Spain but from IAG. The UGT representative added that if the Administration will help, "this will be easy" and if not, they will stop the workers and the "dismantling of Iberia".
Meanwhile, the pilots union, the Sepla, which has been negotiating with Iberia meanwhile, said last week that he preferred to wait to see what steps gives the company before making a decision. The Sepla and was left out of the demonstrations called in December.
