Almost half of the homeless are more than three years in that position and 32% have lost the roof this year. This group, hard count, amounts to nearly 23,000 people, which are those that have been through centers (accommodation and catering), according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE).
80% of these people are men and more than half of the total are under 45 years, with the median age at 42. The main causes of homelessness are loss of employment (45%), not being able to meet the payments of housing (26%) or the separation of the couple (20%). Although experts know that not always enough of these reasons, but, usually, is a mixture of several of them leading to this situation.
The lack of family networks is crucial, as indicated by the figures: 51% of them are single and 28% were separated or divorced. One in 10 have children, but lack of money has been a constant in their lives and 41% share the loss of a family member.
The 60% completed secondary education and even reached 11.8% higher studies. More than half are seeking employment and 38% seeking leads one to three years. 17% for more than three.
