At least 123 people have died in Russia because of the frigid cold snap that hit in recent weeks both Siberia and the European part of the country, health officials said Monday. "During the last days one person died frozen in the Tomsk region, one in Tatarstan, two in Yaroslavl and in Kurban, Adygea and Voronezh". For the same reason, several hundred people had to be treated by medical services, including thirty children.
In total, since the arrival of the cold snap freezes some 1745 people suffered, of which less than half were hospitalized. Moscow lived from Saturday to Sunday the coldest night of winter at 23 degrees below zero, said today the Meteorological Service of the city, while in the regions around the capital the temperatures were around 28 degrees below zero.

The cold wave that swept across the country, from its westernmost border to the Pacific Ocean, is the longest for 75 years in December. Lower temperatures, below 50 degrees below zero, have been recorded in the peninsula of Chukotka and Magadan region in the far east. For this reason, in the main cities of the country, the authorities have been forced to open hot food places and public spaces for shelter.
According to weather services, temperatures will experience a sharp rise during the next few hours, to the point that tomorrow, Wednesday, thermometers marked just below freezing. In neighboring Ukraine, which was beaten with particular virulence by the Siberian cold wave, more than 80 people, mostly poor, perished.
