The household consumption remains weak in an economy in recession since late 2011. Sales of retail trade fell by 7.8% in November compared with the same month of 2011 and now total 29 months of consecutive decline. The decline on Friday by the National Statistics Institute (INE), however, moderates the year drop experienced in October (-9.7% if the difference in the number of working days in the month in different years ), one month after the entry into force of the VAT hike.
The Bank of Spain argues that the contraction in household consumption has caused an acceleration of the decline in gross domestic product (GDP) in the fourth quarter, with less investment in construction and a moderate dynamism of tourism in the central part of the year.
The decline has affected the sale of food products, which fell by 2.4% year on year, and the rest (12.2%), including household equipment (-13.3%). The only sector to record an increase is that of vehicle registrations, which rose 5.3% from the previous month by the impact of the aid program (PIVE).
In the first eleven months of 2012, the industry has reduced its sales by 6.4% over the same period of 2011. The variation between November and last month marked a decline of 4.8%, the smallest decline in the last five years.
All modes of distribution cut their sales in October. Service stations registered a decline of 6.6%, while the largest decrease was in small chains (-11%), while supermarkets reduced sales by 2.7%.
Sales fell in November in all regions, especially in Murcia (-11.4%) and Castilla-La Mancha (-10.5%).
Employment is reduced by 1.6%
Employment in the retail sector fell by 1.6% in November compared to the same month of 2011, four points below the rate in October.
With the exception of September 2011, when there was no change at all, employment in retail since August 2008 has experienced negative annual rates.
All modes of distribution cut jobs last month year on year, except the big chains, which maintain their number of employees over the same month last year.
